To spotlight the upcoming release of State of Horror: North Carolina on Tuesday February 10th we have spent the week featuring the great authors from the book. So far we have introduced: Spencer Carvalho, Randal Keith Jackson, Kathryn M. Hearst, L.J. Heydorn, Frank J. Edler, Nathanael Gass, Kenneth W. Cain, Frank Larnerd, Susan Hicks Wong, Armand Rosamilia, Stuart Conover/Kerry Lipp, and Margaret L. Colton. Our final featured author is Matt Andrew with his cool, gritty horror story, The Devil You Know.
Matt recently retired from the U.S. Marines, having completed two deployments to Afghanistan. He lives and works near Dallas, Texas, and is currently working toward his MFA in Creative Writing at Seton Hill University. His fiction has appeared in Pantheon Magazine, Plan B Magazine, and Bete Noir, and is upcoming with Eldritch Press and Blight Digest.

Story synopsis- “The Devil You Know”
“Instead, I ignored the feeling that a thousand hellish eyes watched me, and I followed Deke to the end of the whole mess.”
Hard core drug running biker in late 1970s/early 1980s are on a mission. One of the members was a sniper in Vietnam with his partner Deke. Deke and his partner are backups for the biker crew meeting up with a group of Columbians regarding drug dealing in the bikers’ territory. When all the parties show up, tension build but the bike club appear to have an edge over the Columbians. However, something happens no one saw coming.

Charon Coin Press: What inspired your story in State of Horror?
Matt Andrew: It was total chance, having come across the object of my story (The Devil’s Tramping Ground) on Atlas Obscura. I lived in North Carolina at the time, about an hour from the landmark.
CCP: Is there a reason this particular state appealed to you?
MA: I have spent several years of my life there and love North Carolina.
CCP: What do you look for in a horror story as a reader?
CCP: What is your favorite writing snack food?
CCP: What other works do you have out there?
MA: I have a story coming up in Eldritch Press’s World of Horror Anthology and Blight Digest.
CCP: What is one important thing the readers need to know about you?
MA: That the good guy might not always come out on top in my stories.
CCP: Who are your favorite authors?
MA: Steven King, Elmore Leonard, Chuck Palahniuk.
CCP: What drew you to State of Horror?
MA: The historical aspect. History and horror are a great combination.
CCP: Do you have a favorite state or state you are waiting to open?
MA: Texas, where I live now and somewhere that has a lot of spooky history.
CCP: Music or no music when writing? (and if yes on music, what are you listening to?
MA: Big yes to music, currently listening to Fugazi and Faith No More.
